Boy With Style On @UnclesWithStyle
Uncle vintage vs Hypebeast vintage
Personally, my funniest chat to date:
@UnclesWithStyle?
After a Hong Kong trip, as a moodboard for my own style. I should start posting Grandmas. Singapore’s aging population is why they’re more old people on the streets; that’s street style.
Style?
I used to wear Giordano and Hang Ten. When Uniqlo and H&M came to Singapore, they exposed me to fashion.
I watched old Hong Kong movies, started dressing like Andy Lau, Jackie Chan. I posted a fit pic on Reddit. I got 1.8K upvotes.
Old people dress for comfort, practicality. “I’m having a painful back.”
Each old person is a time capsule of when they stopped buying clothes.
Someone said, “I bought this shirt 30 years ago.”
In a few decades, old people will wear Yeezys.
Now, I wear things secondhand, tailored, stolen from my grandfather. On Tinder and OkCupid, girls like my style.
Some old people push boundaries. People might think “Xiao Lang” (crazy guy). I’ve seen old men in cowboy hats, socks with sandals.
Lessons?
An old man who sold me $5 jeans told me he was arrested for having long hair. It used to be illegal.
Maybe people hang soft toys to their belt to better see their keys. Some hang keys to their belt because they could be clumsy.
Polo tees, tucked into cargo shorts. Pleats. Oversized tees. Silk, rayon shirts. Strange pattern thin, polyester shirts. Baseball, baker boy caps. High socks. Chains, caribiners to belt loop.
Where to shop?
In “fashion” terms: “statement” pieces are “archival.” Pants are tailored. HDB area; wherever their knees can take them.
Is @UnclesWithStyle a lifestyle?
I drink kopi over hipster coffee, Starbucks. Unlike carefree old people, I’m stressed from school.
Is it a joke?
@UnclesWithStyle is lighthearted; not a joke.
Uncle vintage vs Hypebeast vintage.
Old people don’t focus on brands. It’s quirky.
Hypebeasts buy hoodies, beanies, thick, heavy jackets, skater sneakers.
Career?
I could be an expert on old people style.
Art/creative director.
